| SPENCER:
Oh yea, our goals for the last record weren't very high. We kinda
just went with it and didn't stop touring.
MWE:
I know you guys just got back from Sweden; did you have any extremely
positive experiences that were memorable?
SPENCER:
Yea, meeting the people. The people there are very genuine people.
Theyre pretty die hard about what they do, like their work ethic.
Whether theyre working at Mc Donalds or shooting a video, they
seem to do it because they love it. They don't do it for the money.
It was pretty wild in Sweden. We got to go snowmobiling and that
was awesome. The video company surprised us with the snowmobiling.
MWE:
Being from America, has UnderOath received a good response overseas
for the most part?
SPENCER: Yea,
overseas for the most part seems to be all right. It's cool, though
we had some legal issues we had to work out overseas, but for
this record that's about to come out it should be pretty good.
It's been good in the past and the shows are always good.
MWE:
You seem to be pretty hyped for the new record and your summer
stint on the Vans Warped Tour, whats the feelings?
SPENCER: Yea,
man just like being asked to play main stage all summer, it's
kinda crazy. We never thought we would ever do that.
MWE:
Are you playing anything new in your set and if so, how has the
response from fans been?
SPENCER: Oh
yea, kids have been stoked on it. We play like 3 and 1/2 new songs.
We play the beginning of one that's almost like an interlude kind
of thing.
MWE:
What do you hope kids take home from UnderOath?
SPENCER: Hopefully
with this new record, maybe more of an open mind on music. Just
like maybe trying something different musically, taste wise. There's
more out there then all the crappy pop stuff you hear on the radio.
There is really in an art sense, no limitation on what you can
do and not be scared to embrace or listen to it; checking something
out that you would have never listened to before. We're not all
the same, so were not going to all write the same songs.
MWE:
Do you find it hard not to be lumped into the fashionable trends
of music these days?
SPENCER: I
think maybe at first but not so much any more. We stay clear of
radio and major labels, ummI don't know. We just do our own thing,
we always have.
MWE:
What has been the most personally rewarding feeling from playing
in a band that has somewhat succeeded while staying true to yourselves
without selling out?
SPENCER: I
think the coolest thing that has happened is with our newest record.
I don't know if you've heard it but we really focused on pushing
ourselves musically and lyrically, just raising the bar for ourselves
and not worrying about being accepted by interviewers, media,
MTV, FUSE, whatever. All the feedback we've gotten has been great.
People are really stoked about it and to know that there are bands
that try to make those people happy, and all we did was focus
on writing the best record we could at the time. That's a good
feeling.
